Realist Oil Painting and Drawing Lessons available. Learn both classical and contemporary realist techniques from an experienced teacher.

Students start with a series of private drawing lessons. After this intensive "kick-off" series, students meet regularly for individual mentoring until drawing is mastered and naturally graduate to semi-private group lessons. Specialty weekend workshops are also available but fill up quickly.

- Drawing
- Painting
- Still Life
- Portrait
- Landscape

Small group lessons are taught in an "atelier" (studio) learning environment with only 5-8 people (or fewer). Using this time honored approach (used in schools in Florance Italy), the teaching artist, Tricia Ratliff works with each student (you) to develop a tailored learning path and help you achieve your artistic goals at your own pace without the limitations of a large group class. All ages and experience levels welcome. Learn both classical and contemporary methods of drawing and painting.

Art students at Tricia's atelier learn to paint everything from still life and landscapes to complex artwork of people wearing jewelry, fur, velvet, diamonds, gold, satin and more. Call for details: 703.593.6444

NEW ART GALLERY IN WASHINGTON, DC
Winter Palace Studio Opens its Doors to the Public at a New Venue in Georgetown.

Washington, DC - October 22, 2009 - Artists/Owners Natasha Mokina and Victor Pakhomkin envision their recently opened gallery, WINTER PALACE STUDIO, as a sanctuary for realist art that combines classical craftsmanship and contemporary concepts. The gallery will exhibit paintings by Mokina and Pakhomkin and group shows by local and international artists who share the gallery's philosophy. It will also hold realistic painting and drawing classes, workshops and seminars.

The two artists have worked in the Washington, DC area for nearly twenty years creating highly realistic oil paintings, murals, portraits by commission and teaching academic painting and drawing in their studio in Bethesda. Natasha Mokina is on the faculty of the Corcoran College of Art and Design.

“It still feels like a dream to see ourselves and our paintings in this beautiful historic courtyard, says Natasha Mokina. This is the prettiest place in Georgetown. I just cannot get over the sense of this fantastic mix of times and places: the C&O Canal reminiscent of canals in St. Petersburg (our birth place), old brick buildings of Georgetown evoking “The Little Street“ by Vermeer… ”

WINTER PALACE STUDIO/CONTEMPORARY REALISM gallery is located at “Galleries 1054” in Canal Square at 1054 31st Street NW. The gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday 12:00 to 6:00 pm.

The opening reception for a new exhibition ”Black Kitchen Magic, Etc” featuring the paintings by Natasha Mokina and Victor Pakhomkin is Friday, November 20, 2009 from 6 pm to 8 pm.

More information about the gallery and the artists can be found at www.WinterPalaceStudio.com

Unapproved Copies From China ... A Long Established Practice?

Hello everyone,

See the link at the bottom of this post for an interesting story about Gilbert Stuart's George Washington.

You've probably become aware of (or even been contacted by) copyists companies who take images of paintings, recreate them and sell them as original works of art without your permission. Some of them are so bold that they've even sold the paintings on e-bay. Last year, I saw an "Originals Oil Painting of Tony Ryder" offered on-line by a seller in China for around $300 which was clearly a copy of one of Ryder's well known paintings. Hilarious!

This summer, some painting peers and I were contacted simultaneously by a group in China requesting high resolution digital images of our work and posing as buyers. At the time, I thought this phenomenon of "chinese copyists" was fairly new ... possibly in the last 20-40 years. I also assumed it was just random chance that the group contacting us was from China and because copying happens all over the world. The article below (sent by Walter Ratliff) shed new light on other possible issues associated with unapproved copying.
